About Video Overlays & Blend Modes

Video overlays are an incredible way to add texture, atmosphere, and organic imperfections to digital footage. Whether you are adding vintage film grain, glowing light leaks, or analog VHS damage, overlays provide a cinematic touch that can transform the aesthetic of your project.

To use these elements, you must utilize Blend Modes in your editing software. Placing an overlay on a track above your footage and changing the blend mode to "Screen" or "Add" will remove the black background and leave only the bright elements (perfect for light leaks and lens flares). Using "Multiply" works well for dark textures, while "Overlay" or "Soft Light" is ideal for blending film grain naturally.

How to Use Overlays in Premiere Pro

  1. Import the Overlay: Drag and drop the overlay video file into your project panel.
  2. Place in Timeline: Drag the overlay onto a video track (e.g., V2) directly above your main footage (V1).
  3. Open Effect Controls: Select the overlay clip and navigate to the Effect Controls panel.
  4. Adjust Opacity/Blend Mode: Under the "Opacity" dropdown, change the "Blend Mode" from Normal to Screen (for light leaks/flares) or Overlay/Soft Light (for film grain).
  5. Fine-Tune: Adjust the overall opacity percentage to make the effect more subtle if needed. Add a tint or curve adjustment to the overlay layer to color-match it to your scene.
