How to Install Presets in Adobe Premiere Pro

Presets are powerful tools that save time and enhance consistency in your editing workflow. Whether you're working with color grading LUTs, complex effect combinations, or standardized timeline sequences, knowing how to properly install and manage these presets in Adobe Premiere Pro is essential for modern video editors.

Types of Presets

Before installing, it's important to identify which type of preset you have downloaded, as the installation method varies:

  • Lumetri Color Presets (.cube, .look): Used for color grading and correction.
  • Effects Presets (.prfpset): Contains saved effect settings, keyframes, and animations.
  • Sequence Presets (.sqpreset): Custom timeline settings for specific delivery requirements.

Installing Lumetri Color Presets (LUTs)

LUTs (Look Up Tables) can be applied in two different places within the Lumetri Color panel, depending on their purpose.

Method 1: Technical LUTs (Basic Correction)

For conversion LUTs (e.g., Log to Rec.709):

  1. Open the Lumetri Color panel.
  2. Navigate to the Basic Correction tab.
  3. Click the Input LUT dropdown menu and select Browse...
  4. Locate and select your .cube file.

Method 2: Creative LUTs (Look)

For stylized color grading looks:

  1. In the Lumetri Color panel, go to the Creative tab.
  2. Click the Look dropdown and select Browse...
  3. Locate and apply your LUT.
Pro Tip: To make LUTs permanently appear in the dropdown menu, place them in Premiere's application folders. However, updating Premiere may wipe these folders, so the "Browse" method is safer for custom LUTs.

Installing Effects Presets (.prfpset)

Effects presets are commonly used for transitions, text animations, and audio effects. Here is how to install them:

  1. Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects).
  2. Right-click on the Presets folder (or the hamburger menu at the top right of the panel).
  3. Select Import Presets...
  4. Navigate to your downloaded .prfpset file and click Open.

Your new presets will now appear inside the Presets folder, ready to be dragged onto your clips.

Installing Sequence Presets

Sequence presets ensure your timelines are perfectly formatted for your specific camera or delivery platform.

  1. Go to File > New > Sequence (or press Ctrl/Cmd + N).
  2. In the New Sequence dialog, go to the Settings tab.
  3. Configure your desired settings (Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, etc.).
  4. Click the Save Preset... button at the bottom.
  5. Name your preset and add a description. It will now appear in the Custom folder under Sequence Presets.

Where Premiere Pro Stores Preset Files

Understanding where Premiere Pro stores these files can help with manual installation and backup:

  • Windows Effects Presets: C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\Adobe\Premiere Pro\[Version]\Profile-[Name]\Effect Presets and Custom Items.prfpset
  • macOS Effects Presets: ~/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Pro/[Version]/Profile-[Name]/Effect Presets and Custom Items.prfpset

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you encounter issues during installation, try these fixes:

  • Presets not appearing: Sometimes Premiere Pro needs to be restarted after importing a large batch of presets.
  • File format mismatch: Ensure you aren't trying to install After Effects presets (.ffx) into Premiere Pro.
  • Broken LUT preview: If a LUT causes your footage to look glitched or overly contrasted, you may be applying a Creative LUT in the Basic Correction tab, or the LUT might not be designed for your footage's color space.

Organization Tips

A cluttered Effects panel slows down editing. Keep your workspace clean by right-clicking inside the Effects panel and creating New Custom Bins. Name them clearly (e.g., "Audio Sweetening", "Glitch Transitions", "Text Animators") and drag your imported presets into these corresponding sub-folders. Establishing a solid naming convention early on will save hours of searching down the line.
